A short note on strongly flat covers of acts over monoids

    No full text
Recently two different concepts of covers of acts over monoids have been studied by a number of authors and many interesting results discovered. One of these concepts is based on coessential epimorphisms and the other is based on Enochs' definition of a flat cover of a module over a ring. Two recent papers have suggested that in the former case, strongly flat covers are not unique. We show that these examples are in fact false and so the question of uniqueness appears to still remain open. In the latter case, we re-present an example due to Kruml that demonstrates that, unlike the case for flat covers of modules, strongly flat covers of S-acts do not always exist

Measuring the Lifetime of Trapped Sleptons Using the General Purpose LHC Detectors

In supergravity where the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP) decays to the gravitino with a naturally long lifetime (10^4 - 10^8). However, cosmological constraints favour charged sleptons with lifetimes below a year as the natural NLSP candidate. For this scenario we report a method to accurately determine the slepton lifetime and SUSY cross-section from observation of the decays of sleptons trapped in the material comprising the main detector (ATLAS, CMS). A measurement of the lifetime to 5% is possible after 3 years at nominal luminosity and running conditions. This method is sensitive to the cosmologically preferred stau lifetime of ~37 days and does not require the use of ancillary trapping volumes

Tool and process for miniature explosive joining of tubes

    Get PDF
A tool and process to be used in the explosive joining of tubes is disclosed. The tool consists of an initiator, a tool form, and a ribbon explosive. The assembled tool is a compact, storable, and safe device suitable for explosive joining of small, lightweight tubes down to 0.20 inch in diameter. The invention is inserted into either another tube or a tube plate. A shim or standoff between the two surfaces to be welded is necessary. Initiation of the explosive inside the tube results in a high velocity, angular collision between the mating surfaces. This collision creates surface melts and collision bonding wherein electron-sharing linkups are formed
